Understanding Leads on GuruExplorer

If you're new to GuruExplorer or deciding which subscription tier is right for you, understanding how leads work is the most important thing to get right from day one. This guide walks you through exactly what happens when a student or parent searches for a tutor — and how your tier determines where you show up.

What Is a Lead?

A lead on GuruExplorer is a booking request — sent directly by a student or parent who has viewed your profile and decided they want to engage you. This isn't a casual enquiry or a cold contact; by the time a lead reaches you, the student has already chosen to take action. That makes every lead on GuruExplorer a high-intention signal, not just a browse.

Your selected coverage areas determine where you appear most prominently in search results. Students searching outside your chosen regions may still discover and book you — your coverage areas signal where you prefer to teach, not a hard boundary on who can reach you.

The Two Tiers That Receive Leads

GuruExplorer has three subscription tiers. Seeker is the entry-level plan. Explorer Pro and Maverick are the two active tiers where lead flow happens.

Explorer Pro

Explorer Pro is the mid-tier plan. As an Explorer Pro tutor, your profile enters the general matching pool and appears in search results based on your merit score — a combination of your response rate, review ratings, verified credentials, and availability etc.

Explorer Pro also unlocks Verify-My-Cert, GuruExplorer's credential verification feature. Once verified, your profile displays a trust badge that parents can see immediately — giving you credibility from day one, even before your first review comes in. Once you've hit your verification targets, the badge stays on your profile permanently, even if you choose not to renew your subscription.

You set your coverage areas during profile setup, choosing the specific regions across Singapore where you prefer to teach. Your profile ranks higher in results for students searching within those areas. Outside your selected regions, your profile can still appear — it just won't be prioritised ahead of tutors who have selected that area.

Maverick

Maverick is the top-tier plan and carries the strongest visibility on the platform. Maverick tutors sit in a priority pool that receives the majority of lead exposure, ahead of Explorer Pro tutors in the same subject and region.

Like Explorer Pro, Maverick includes Verify-My-Cert. Combined with priority placement, a verified credential badge on a Maverick profile sends a strong trust signal to parents — particularly useful when competing for high-demand subjects or premium rates.

In addition to the coverage area selection available to all active tiers, Maverick tutors benefit from higher placement in recommended results, which translates directly into more profile views and more inbound booking requests.

The trade-off is straightforward: Maverick requires a higher subscription commitment, but for tutors who rely on GuruExplorer as a primary source of students, the return on that investment is faster and more consistent lead flow. Like all GuruExplorer subscriptions, Maverick doesn't auto-renew — you're always in control of when and whether you continue.

How Coverage Areas Work

Both Explorer Pro and Maverick tutors choose their coverage areas when setting up their profile. GuruExplorer uses a region-based model across Singapore, so rather than entering a postcode or radius, you simply select the areas where you want to teach — for example, Tampines, Bishan, or Jurong West.

Here's what makes this different from how most platforms handle location: you can see where student demand is highest when you commit to your areas. GuruExplorer surfaces demand signals by region, so you can make an informed choice about where to focus rather than guessing.

Your coverage areas shape where you rank strongest, helping students in those regions find you first. You can update your areas at any time from your profile dashboard — if your schedule or travel preferences change, simply adjust your regions and your ranking reflects that immediately.

What Happens After You Receive a Lead

When a student or parent sends a booking request, that's your lead. You receive a notification via the platform, and accepting the request moves the booking toward confirmation and opens direct communication with the student.

Your acceptance rate is one of the most important factors in your merit score. Every booking request you accept is a signal to the platform — and to parents — that you're active, committed, and ready to teach. Tutors who consistently accept leads rank higher over time, which means more visibility and more inbound requests. Treat every lead seriously; it reflects your standing on the platform.

Choosing the Right Tier

If you're just starting out on GuruExplorer and building your first few reviews, Explorer Pro is a sensible starting point. It gives you full access to the lead pool in your chosen areas without requiring the commitment of Maverick upfront.

Once your profile has reviews, a verified credential or two, and a consistent acceptance rate, upgrading to Maverick accelerates your visibility at exactly the point where your profile can make the most of that exposure.
